Abstract

This article presents a case study discussing the function and the significance of the housing situation and housing policy for the integration potential of a neighbourhood. Housing policies in the ethnically diverse neighbourhood of Marxloh are analysed to determine whether they promote or impede the functional integration of the Turkish population. The project was mainly based on biographical interviews with German and Turkish neighbourhood residents.
The research focuses on an industry-owned residential area, where the Turkish population lives highly spacially segregated. A spatial correspondence between ethnically segregated areas and dilapidation of the housing stock can be observed. Housing policies leading to the segregation process and effects of the deterioration are critically discussed. In conclusion, proposals for the promotion of integrated neighbourhood development are made.
