Abstract

The contribution has two aims. At first it intends to clarify some recent discussions about the dichotomy of „inclusion and exclusion“ and the relationship between social differentiation and social inequality as they are held by sociological system theory following Niklas Luhmann. In the second part it is shown that the meaning of „inclusion“ covers only a very special aspect of the broader concept of „integration“ as it was used regularly within the context of the sociology of migration and interethnic relations. The various dimensions of the concept of „integration“, then, are demonstrated with respect to some special aspects of the integration of migrants and ethnic minorities: ethnic conflicts, structural assimilation, ethnic pluralization and ethnic stratification.
